What is the use of the most sublime enlightenment and divine revelation if we do not love? -Jean Pierre De Caussade
Radical Love
It often starts when we experience or witness the love of Christ firsthand. We realize that God is big and His love for us is expressed in radical ways. As we strive to love God back we end up trying to hard and fall into the rut of trying to earn God’s love which has already been freely given. We see the passionate love God has for us and so we convince ourselves that if only we did the right things, then we will be reciprocating the kind of radical love that God desires from us. Over time we forget what it is we are working for.
On Sunday I had the joy of preaching at Bay Area Community Church in the final part of our series “Who.” We dove into Acts Chapter 8 and encountered a short story about a little known character Simon the Great. Simon was a guy in the city of Samaria who had convinced the people that he was great through his acts of magic and sorcery. But with the coming of Philip followed by Peter and John, Simon found that his power was nothing but cheap parlor tricks compared to the power of the Holy Spirit. This short story revealed how easy it is to believe in Jesus and yet how hard it is to have a heart that longs for Jesus. Although Simon believed in Jesus, He didn’t know Jesus.
I was convicted as I studied and prepared for this sermon that my own life and passion for Jesus can always grow as I seek to know him more. If you would like to hear more feel free to click on the link below and go to the Who:Simon podcast.
